Ruffwear dog boots and dog shoes are designed from a dog’s perspective and built to last. Dog booties may sound like an odd concept, but paw protection for dogs can be beneficial for our adventuring sidekicks year-round. From dog boots for winter built to protect from cold, snow, ice, and sno-melt chemicals; to rugged and breathable dog boots for summer and hot pavement; our dogs can join us no matter what the trail ahead looks like.

To design dog boots that stay on, Ruffwear uses a hook-and-loop strap that cinches around the narrowest part of the dog’s leg and is sized by your dog’s paw width. Measure their paw width (both front paws and back paws – they’re often different!) to find the right sizes and make sure it’s the best dog boot for them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Dogs should wear boots in various situations to protect their paws, including extreme weather conditions like cold, snow, and ice, as well as hot surfaces such as pavement or sand during the summer. Boots for dogs also provide traction and cushioning on rough terrain, shield paws from allergens and irritants, and aid in the healing process after injuries or surgeries. The Hi & Light™ Trail Shoes and Grip Trex™ Boots are perfect for sunny conditions, while the Polar Trex™ are your go-to for winter traction and insulation.

Learning how to put on dog boots takes patience, but with practice, the process becomes quick and easy. Begin by opening the boot wide and placing your dog's paw gently into the boot, ensuring that their toes are properly positioned. Then, fasten the boot securely using the adjustable straps or closures provided, making sure it fits snugly but not too tight. Ensure that the boot is positioned correctly, with the tread facing downwards for optimal traction. Repeat this process for each paw, adjusting as necessary for a comfortable and secure fit.

All of Ruffwear’s boots are available in eight sizes and in sets of two. Many dogs have wider front paws than rear paws. With sets of two, you can order the appropriate sizes for a good fit on both the front and rear paws. To learn more about which size is best for your dog, check out our guide.

Getting your dog comfortable in dog shoes involves a gradual and patient approach. Start by introducing the shoes to your dog in a positive and calm environment, allowing them to sniff and inspect the shoes at their own pace. Encourage your dog with treats and praise as they show interest in the shoes. Once they seem comfortable, gently place one on their paw and reward them for staying calm. Gradually increase the duration of time they wear the shoes indoors before venturing outside. Take short walks at first, slowly increasing the distance as your dog becomes more accustomed to wearing the shoes. Be patient and provide plenty of positive reinforcement throughout the process.

To prepare your dog for outdoor adventures, ensure they’re in good physical condition by providing regular exercise and veterinary check-ups. It’s also important to provide them with appropriate gear such as a harness, leash, and dog socks to wear with their boots so they’re equipped for the journey ahead. You’ll also want to pack essentials like water, food, a first aid kit, and other dog accessories such as pick-up bags and a safety light. With proper preparation and care, you and your dog can enjoy countless memorable adventures together in the great outdoors.
